As the dean of the School of Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Teresa Taber Doughty focuses on advancing the impact of the School as part of a leading research university (Carnegie R1). She has enthusiastically served as a special educator, researcher, teacher trainer, and administrative leader in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, and Texas.
She is committed to the preparation of outstanding education professionals to ensure that every child has access to a highly effective teacher and school leader. In her current role, she leads the School of Education in meeting its strategic goals with a focus on scholarship, program, and enrollment growth; service to the university and community; social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; and innovation through strategic planning as we support students, faculty, and staff. She believes that quality professional preparation grounded in evidence-based research is the foundation for effective schools, impactful leadership, and thriving communities.
Author and co-author of more than 60 professional publications, she currently serves as a Quality Review team lead for the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP), previously served on the Board of Examiners for CAEP/NCATE, and as the Executive Director for the Division of Autism and Developmental Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children. She also served on numerous professional editorial boards for scholarly journals and was an executive board member for the AWARE Foundation in Arlington, TX.
Prior to joining UAB, Dr. Taber Doughty served on the faculty at Purdue University, as the associate dean for learning in the College of Education at Purdue, and as the Dean of the College of Education at the University of Texas at Arlington. She earned her degrees at Auburn University (B.S.) in Auburn, AL and Georgia State University (M.Ed. and Ph.D) in Atlanta, GA.
She and her husband have three adult children, seven grandchildren, and two goldendoodles named Boomer and Buttercup.
